While in 2025 we focused on infrastructural improvements, in 2026 we returned to feature-focused updates. Given the maturity of the system, we have arrived at a place where we must look harder for improvements that will move the needle the most for the most people. This is a marvelous problem to have and we feel confident we’ve identified a nice set of extensions this year. The first one noted has been in the works for a good while but it is finally ready for highway travel.
Exam Scheduling
The largest update to the ofCourse system in the last several years, exam scheduling, makes its debut this Fall (2026). It starts in Step 3 with an option to ask faculty what sort of final their class will have. Then, after the Step 5 schedule is set, you can build an exam schedule based on the faculty reported exam-type and based on original course placements (to avoid student conflicts).
Back-to-Back Room Scheduling
Our room placement engine has been extended to flag courses you wish to be scheduled consecutively in the same room. For profs teaching back-to-back classes, it obviously makes sense to prevent them from bouncing from room to room throughout the day. This new ability makes quick and easy work of this need.
Advanced Schedule Filtering
We are working on more sophisticated filtering tools that will allow you to better zero in on the specific courses you wish to target. These new filters will magically appear on pages as they are completed, so the system will provide perpetual drips of improvement as this ongoing endeavor continues.
Bulk-Editing
More and better bulk-editing is coming to ofCourse. We are working on making it possible to edit more things with fewer jumps in and out of properties pages. We have a few working models already in place (priority preferences, day/eve programming). Given the ease and success of these new formats, we will be extending this ability to more areas of the site.
